Past Simple and Past Continuous Tense

The Past Continuous Tense

· My father was working in the garden at ten o'clock.

· Kelly was collecting fruit in the garden at the time of the accident.
· I was knocking at the door at the time of the murder.
· My father was playing the piano at seven o'clock this evening.
· The fire was still burning at five o'clock this morning
· At six o'clock this evening I was waiting for you at the station.
· This time last year, we were attending our last year at the university.

A - Did you hear about that terrible accident last week?
B - Yes, mike told me about it / yes, I read it in the paper.

Yukarıda verilen soruya cevap verilen cümlede evet Mike bana söyledi / yada evet gazetede okudum diyen kişinin konu hakkında artık fazla bilgiye gereksinimi yoktur. Ama ayni soruya cevap

A - Did you hear about that terrible accident last week?
B - Oh! Mike was telling about it / I was reading about it in the paper.

· Yesterday, from four o'clock to six o'clock, we were playing cards.
· Between Monday and Friday last week, I was studying biology.
· All last week, we were studying our lessons.
· We were talking to each other during the lesson.
· We were climbing up the mountain all day long.

1 I was studying English yesterday.
2 I studied English yesterday.

· Yesterday, we were listening to an interesting play on the radio.

· Yesterday, we listened to an interesting play on the radio.

· Yesterday, from six o'clock to seven o'clock, we listened to an interesting play on the radio.

· Jaclyn was wearing a blue dress at the ball.
· Smoke was coming from the chimney of the farmhouse.
· The farmer's children were playing with the dog and the farmer himself was leaning on the gate.
· The other day I was talking to the Prime Minister of Turkey.
· Last night I was dancing with the beautiful daughter of the admiral.

Geçmişte sürekli olarak alışkanlık “Habitual Past (used to / would)” halinde yapılan ya da sık sık yaptığımız eylemleri "The Past Continuous" ile kullanırız.

· A - How much did you get at your last job?
  B - Well, I was getting five hundred dollars a month. =
Well, I used to get five hundred dollars a month.

B - I don't know, but he was hoping to.

· We were having guests tonight, but they are rather late.
