Her iki modal ifadede “yapmama gerek yoktu/yapmak zorunda değildim bu nedenle de yapmadım” anlamına gelir.
- Ann didn’t need / have to call a mechanic when his car broke down. She repaired it on her own.
- David didn’t need to / have to take his jacket to the dry cleaners. His wife managed to remove the stain on it.
- She didn't need to / didn't have to hurry because her train was to leave at 11 o'clock and it was only 10 o'clock at that time.
Needn't have + V3
"Yaptın ama yapmama gerek yoktu / yapmak zorunda değildim ama yaptım" demektir. Geçmişte söz edilen konuda herhangi bir zorunluluk olmamasına karşın bilerek veya bilmeden boşu boşuna, gereksiz yere yaptım anlamını ifade eder.
- Actually, I needn’t have bought all that food at the supermarket. I have just realized we have got plenty already. (Aslında süpermarkette bu kadar yiyecek almam gerekmiyordu. Daha yeni çok şey aldığımızı fark ettim.)
- You needn’t have carried that suitcase. Why didn't you take a taxi? (O valizi taşımanıza gerek yoktu. Neden taksiye binmedin?
- Sam needn’t have called an ambulance when he cut his finger. It was just a small cut and waste of time. (Sam'in parmağını kestiğinde ambulans çağırmasına gerek yoktu. Sadece küçük bir kesikti ve zaman kaybı oldu.)
