Noun Clause: The Use of 'The Fact That ...'

“THE FACT THAT + CLAUSE” KULLANIMI:

“The fact that” ifadesi “that” gibi, cümlenin öznesi ya da nesnesi olarak kullanılabilir. Ancak "the fact that" yapısının cümlenin öznesi konumunda kullanılması daha yaygındır. Gerçekleşmiş veya gerçek olan bir ifadeyi bu yapı ile kullanırız. "That clause" ile başlayan isim cümlecikleri, daha çok resmi İngilizce’de kullanılır. Bunun dışında "the fact that" kullanımı da tercih edilebilir. Ancak, cümlenin nesnesi olarak kullanılacaksa, "the fact that" yerine "that clause" kullanılması daha yaygındır.

• Statement: He can speak two foreign languages. That is an advantage over the other applicants.
• Noun clause: The fact that he can speak two foreign languages is an advantage over the other applicants. (Onun İki yabancı dili konuşabilmesi diğer müracaat edenler üzerine bir avantajdır.)

• Statement: It wasn't you that made the mistake. This will be taken into account.
• Noun clause: The fact that it wasn't you that made the mistake will be taken into account. (Hata yapanın senin olmamam göz önünde bulundurulacaktır.)

Note: The fact that she is leaving tomorrow makes Mike sad cümlesinde “gerçeği” ifadesini kullanamayız, çünkü ayrılma olayı geçekleşmemiştir. Doğru ifade şöyle olmalıdır. That she is leaving tomorrow makes Mike sad.

Eğer, “that clause” edatlardan (prepositions) sonra kullanılacaksa (talk about, pay attention to, responsible for, interested in, etc), bu durumda "that" değil "the fact that"kullanılmalıdır.

• The boss paid attention to the fact that she had been successful in realizing the last project. (Patron son projeyi germeleştirmesindeki başarılı olmasını dikkate aldı .)
• Yesterday we talked about the fact that she was betrayed by her husband. (Dün, kocası tarafından aldılması hakkında konuştuk.)
• He is very excited about the fact that he was promoted to the head engineer. (Baş mühendis olarak terfi edimesi konusunda oldukça heyecanlandı.)

İsim cümleciği bir preposition'dan sonra kullanılmayacaksa, nesne olarak “that clause” kullanılması daha yaygındır. Aşağıda “that clause” alan fillerle kurulmuş örnek cümleler yer almaktadır.

• It was announced that the government would apply the new traffic fines the following week. (Hükümetin yeni trafik cezalarını önümüzdeki hafta uygulamaya koyacağını bildirildi.)
• I opened the newspaper and read that the prime minister had resigned. (Gazeteyi açtım ve başbakan'ın istifa etmiş olduğunu okudum.)
