Superlatives

SUPERLATIVE (en üstünlük derecesi)

Sıfat superlative biçimi, bir kişi ya da nesnenin, belirtilen özelliğe belli bir grubun içerisinde en üst ya da en alt düzeyde sahip olduğunu ifade eder. Superlative'in önünde "the" kullanılır.

ONE SYLLABLE (Tek heceli sıfatlarda)

Tek heceli sıfatları sonuna genellikle “–est / st / iest ” getirilerek en üstünlük (superlative) yapılır. Bu durumda karşılaştırmalardaki (comperative) gibi sıfatın son harfi dikkate alınır.

• bright                   the brightest
• narrow                 the narrowest
• fat                         the fattest

· He was not given the job because he is competent, but because he is the oldest person in the department and people respect him because of his age.
· The necklace over there is the cheapest of them all.

İki ve daha fazla heceli olan sıfatların önüne the “most” getirerek en üstünlük (superlative) derecelendirmesi yapılar.

• expensive              the most expensive
• dangerous            the most dangerous
• interesting            the most interesting
• stupid                    the most stupid
• comfortable         the most comfortable

· 'The Commercial Dispatch' is the most progressive of all the newspapers published in Mississippi.
· While coming here I passed the most dangerous road in my life.
· It was the most exciting summer of their lives.
· Martin was the most spoiled of the three brothers.

Kural dışı olanlar:

• better                         the best

• farther                       the farthest
• further                       the furthest
• worse                         the worst
• less                             the least
• elder                          the eldest

· Of all the problems she has faced, this one is by far the worst.
· This is the least popular branch of dentistry.

NOT: Cümlede possessive adjective (my, your, etc) veya " 's " kullanıldığında "the" kullanılmaz. Ankara is Turkey's third largest city Tom is my best friend

Bazı sıfatlarda karşılaştırma yapılırken hem tek heceli hem de birden fazla heceli sıfatlarda uygulanan kurallar doğrultusunda karşılaştırılabilir.

Most + adjective, önünde “the” olmadan kullanıldığında “very” anlamını verir.

· You shouldn’t miss the match. It is going to be most interesting game.

Tanımladığımız öğenin hangi ortamda en iyi, en kötü vs. olduğunu belirtirken, eğer bu ortam bir yer ise in kullanılır: in the world, in Turkey, in our street, etc. Zaman ya da bir grup ifade eden sözcük ise of kullanılır: the happiest time of my life, the shortest month of the year, the most hardworking one of all my students, the most intelligent of us all, the most famous of all the Turkish writers, etc. Grup ifade eden yapılarla among da kullanabiliriz: the cleverest among us, the laziest among my students, etc.

· The Kızılırmak River is the longest one in Turkey


OLDEST-ELDEST

Oldest ve eldest arasındaki fark, older ve elder arasındaki fark ile aynıdır. Eğer bir kişi ya da nesnenin yaşça en büyük olduğunu ifade ediyorsak oldest, aile bireylerinden en büyük olanını ifade ediyorsak eldest kullanılır.

· Who is the oldest student in this classroom?
· The oldest representative came from China.
· My eldest uncle is a lawyer.
· My eldest brother is getting married next week.

AS + ADJECTIVE / ADVERB + AS

Bu yapıyı iki nesneyi karşılaştırdığımızda, iki nesnenin de yapısal anlamda aynı olduğunu ifade etmek için kullanırız. “Just, quite, nearly, almost “ gibi pekiştiricileri bu yapı ile kullanabiliriz.

· He is just as obstinate as a mule.
· Marilyn doesn't speak English so well as her sister does.
· The grass was twice as tall as those in the rest of the field.
· This watch is not as cheap as yours.
· The young Jason is not so handsome as his elder brother.
· I worked as hard as I could, but I couldn't get the chance of promotion.
· David can cook as well as john.
· Sally drives as fast / quickly as Alice does.

Kıyaslama yaptığınız şeyi tekrarlamaya gerek olmayabilir:

· A-May I have a microphone?
  B-No. A megaphone would be as good.

Superlative kullanabilmemiz için tanımlayacağımız nesnenin ait olduğu grubun en az üç öğeden oluşması gerekir. Eğer grup iki öğeden oluşuyorsa comparative kullanılır.

· They have two daughters, and Ayşe is the cleverer of the two.
· They have three sons, and Ali is the most intelligent of the three.
