Impossible Condition / Unreal PAST

Bu tür Koşul Cümleleri "geçmişte" gerçekleştirilememiş koşulları, geçmişle ilgili istekleri, pişmanlıkları, eleştirileri, dile getirmek için kullanılır. Ana Cümleciklerde kullanılan "The Past Perfect" gerçeğe aykırı (contrary to fact) bir koşulu gösterir. Bu tür Koşul Cümlelerinde "geçmiş" zamanla ilgili Zaman Zarfları (adverbs of time) kullanılır. Bu tür Koşul Cümlelerinde, Ana Cümleciklerde "should" ve "would"u kullanırken çok dikkat etmek gerekir, "should" bir mecburiyet gösterdiği için bazen cümleyi anlamak zor olur. Bu nedenle bu tür cümlelerde çoğu zaman "would" kullanmak daha iyi olur.

· If Martin had taken his umbrella yesterday, he would not have got wet.

Bu koşul cümlesi dün Martin'in şemsiyesini almadığını ve bu nedenle ıslandığını gösterir. Martin dün şemsiyesini almış olsaydı elbette ıslanmış olmayacaktı. Bu eylemler şu iki basit cümle ile de açıklanabilir:

· Martin got wet because he did not take her umbrella yesterday.
  (Martin ıslandı çünkü dün şemsiyesini almadı.)

· If the weather had been fine last week, we would (should) have had a picnic.
  (Geçen hafta hava güzel (olmuş) oysaydı piknik yapmış olacaktık.)

Bu koşul cümlesi geçen hafta havanın güzel olmadığını ve bu nedenle piknik yapmadığımızı gösterir. Geçen hafta hava güzel olmuş olsaydı elbette piknik yapmış olacaktık. Bu eylemler şu iki basit cümle ile de açıklanabilir:

· We did not have a picnic because the weather was not fine last week.
  (Piknik yapmadık çünkü geçen hafta hava güzel değildi.)

· If you had told me the truth, I would not have punished you.

  (Bana doğruyu söyleseydin, seni cezalandırmazdım.)
· If I had had time, I would (should) have cleaned the house.

  (Vaktim olsaydı, evi temizlerdim.)
· l would (should) have been delighted if the teacher had come to my party yesterday.

  (Öğretmen dün partime gelseydi çok sevinirdim.)
· Where would you have gone if you had had a lot of money?
· Would you have swum in this lake if the water had been dirty?
· If you had put petrol in the car before you left, it would not have stopped.
· If you had been listening to the teacher, you would have understood the lesson.
· If Mary had not been playing the piano, she would have heard the bell.
