Adverb Clause of Purpose

Ana cümleciğin fiilinin durumuna göre maksat cümleciklerinde bazı kipleri kullanabiliriz. Ana cümleciğin fiilinin “present time” ya da “present perfect” olması durumunda maksat belirten cümlecik “can”, “may”. “must”, “will” + V ” olarak kullanılır. Aynı şekilde ana cümleciğin fiilinin “past simple” ya da “past perfect” olması durumunda da maksat belirten cümlecik “could, might, should, would + V olarak kullanabilir. Aşağıdaki cümleleri inceleyiniz.

In order (that):  -sın diye, -mek için

• Evelyn always gets up early in order that she catch the early bus to work.
• (Evelyn işe erkenden giden otobüsü yakalamak için her zaman erken kalkar.)

Lest: -mesin diye

• They did not complain about the noise lest they annoyed the neighbours.
• (Komşularını kızdırmasınlar diye gürültüyle ilgili şikayette bulunmadılar.)

So:  -sın diye

• Mr. Flint set the alarm clock to 6 a.m. so he could catch seven o'clock shuttle to the airport.
• (Bay Flint, havaalanına giden saat yedi servisini yakalayabilsin diye alarm saatini sabah 6'ya ayarladı.)

So that:  -sın diye; -mek / -mak için

• I want to go to England so that I can speak English fluently.
• (İngilizceyi akıcı bir şekilde konuşabileyim diye İngiltere'ye gitmek istiyorum.)
• Hamlet wanted to kill his uncle so that his father's murder would be avenged.
• (Hamlet, babasının cinayetinin intikamını almak için amcasını öldürmek istedi.)

With  / On the grounds that: -nın sebebiyle

• The song was banned with / on the grounds that it might provoke racial tension.
• (Şarkı, ırksal gerginliğe neden olabileceği gerekçesiyle yasaklandı.)

For the purpose that: -nın maksadıyla

• He  set up of a military unit with the  for the purpose that he began active preparations for a revolt. 
• (Bir isyan için aktif hazırlıklara başlaması maksadıla bir askeri birlik kurdu.)

Lest, so that... not anlamında kullanılıp günümüz İngiliz İngilizce sinde nadiren kullanılır. Daha çok eski ebedi yapıtlarda ya da tören dilinde rastlanır. Amerikan İngilizce sinde biraz daha yaygındır. Lest cümleciğinin fiili, “subjunctive” olarak kabul edilir. Bu durumda “should” atılabilir.

• The guards will watch all night lest robbers (should) come unexpectedly.
• (Nöbetçiler, soyguncular beklenmedik bir şekilde gelebilir diye bütün gece gözleyecekler.)
• The guards watched all night so that robbers didn't come.
• (Nöbetçiler, soyguncular gelmesin diye bütün gece izledi.)
• The governments of the developed countries must take immediate action lest the problem of child poverty (should) grow worse.
• The governments of the developed countries must take immediate action so that the problem of child poverty doesn't grow
