THE WHOLE / ALL
İngilizce öğrenenler bu iki kelimenin kullanımını çok sık karıştırırlar: “whole” yalnızca isimden önce kullanılan bir sıfattır. “All” ile bu yönü ile ortaktır. Ancak, anlam yönünden ayni değildir: “whole” diğer belirteçlerden sonra ve sayılabilir tekil isimlerle kullanılırken, “all” kendisi belirteç olarak önce kullanılır ve hem sayılan hemde sayılmayan isimlerle kullanılır. Sayılan isimlerle kullanılırken “all” dan sonra çoğul isim kullanılır.
· We spent the whole day / all day looking for a nice flat to rent.
· Margo's persistent sarcastic comments to Kate spoilt the whole dinner party.
· My whole day was spoilt when the boss wanted me to write all the reports again.
· All of Turkey / the whole Turkey complain about the financial situation they are in.

“whole” bir şeyin bütünlüğünün bozulmadığını vurgulamak için kullanılır. “A whole” olarak ta kullanılabilir.

“All” zaman sözcükleri ile kullanılırken “the” almaz, ancak “whole” “the” alır.
“All”, bazı cümlelerde “bütün istediğim, yada tek istediğim” anlamında da kullanılabilir.
· All I’ve drunk at the party is a small glass of wine.
· All (that) my grandfather wants is a little peace and comfort in his house.
· All she did in her whole life was serving her husband and bringing up her children
“As a whole” bir bütün olarak, genel bir durumu ifade etmek için kullanılır.
