Infinitives (Mastarlar)

INFINITIVES (Mastarlar)

INFINITIVE AS SUBJECT OF THE SENTENCE
(Özne olarak mastar kullanımı)

· To play basketball for Efes Pilsen is his favourite fantasy.
· To became fluent in a foreign language takes years.
· To train a sheepdog requires skill and patience.

· Her favourite fantasy is to play basketball for Efes Pilsen.
· It takes years to became fluent in a foreign language.
· It requires skill and patience to train a sheepdog.

· To arrive our destination in the daytime we set off the road at down.
· To confirm the order he sent a massage via e-mail.

· Sam phoned me to let me know that he is coming next week.
· Mr. Robinson turned on the TV to listen to the latest news.
· A doctor was sent for to take care of the sick children.

Amaç Belirtmek için “in order to” veya “for” da kullanılabilir.

· In order to arrive our destination in the daytime we set off the road at down.
· Sam phoned me in order to let me know that he is coming next week.
· Sam phoned me for lettting me know that he is coming next week.

To do/in order to do ile for doing'in kullanımı arasındaki ayrıma dikkat ediniz. Bir insanın bir eylemi yapmadaki amacını ifade etmek istiyorsak to do / in order to do kullanılır. Bir nesnenin (bir alet, makina vb.) ne işe yaradığını, ne amaçla kullanıldığını ifade etmek istiyorsak be used for doing ya da be used to do / in order to do kullanılır. Eğer bir nesnenin ne işe yaradığını ifade ediyor, ancak cümlede “be used” kullanmıyorsak, sadece “for doing” kullanılır.

· You have to use a sharp knife to cut / in order to cut this bread
A sharp knife was used for cutting / to cut this bread.
A knife is a tool for cutting things.

· You have to use a large plate to serve / in order to serve dinner.
A large plate is used for serving / to serve dinner
A plate is a tool for serving food.

Ancak, belli bir olayda (specific) bir nesnenin ne amaçla kullanıldığını ifade ederken sadece to do kullanılır.

· Butter is used for cooking / to cook meals. (general)
A lot of butter was used to fry this stake. (specific)

· Whitewash was used for dying / to dye houses. (general)
A special kind of whitewash was used to dye this house. (specific)

İnsanın bir eylemi yapmadaki amacını ifade ederken fiil değil de isim kullanıyorsak, for + a noun (isim) kullanılır.

· He will go to England to attend a language course.
He will go to England for a language course.
· I went to the restaurant to have lunch.
I went to the restaurant for lunch.

IFINITIVE AS SUBJECT COMPLEMENT

· As a son, your duty is to respect your parents and elders.
· When he was a student his ambition was to become a famous scientist.
· A responsible journalist duty is to be unbiased for his observation.
· One of his aims for university is to develop long lasting friendship.

· What you need to be successful in the life is working hard. (general)
What you need to be successful in this exam to study hard (specific)

· What most teachers do after exams is revising the lessons students poor at. (general)
What I mostly do after work is to revise the tests I will use the next day.(specific)

INFINITIVE AS DIRECT OBJECT OF THE SENTENCE

· The new accountant proved (to be) reliable

FOR + NOUN/PRONOUN + INFINITIVE

Özne olarak bir infinitive, gerund ya da it ile başlayan cümlelerde, eylemin kimin için zor, ilginç, kolay vs. olduğunu belirtmek için for + noun/pronoun kullanılır.

OF + NOUN/PRONOUN + INFİNİTİVE
