Present Perfect Continuous

Introduction (Giriş)

Geçmişte belirli bir zamanda başlayan ve konuşma sırasında da devam eden eylemleri dile getirmek için “The Present Perfect Continuous” kullanılır. Bu zamanla kullanılan ifadelerin çoğu aşağıdaki sözcüklerle kullanılır:

for        since    ever    since     since (then)

• Margaret has been sitting in front of the television set for two hours.

Konuşan kişi bu cümlede Margaret’in iki saattir televizyonun önünde oturduğunu ve konuşma anında da oturduğunu ifade etmektedir.

• For the last three years my elder brother has been living in Athens
• That church has been standing here for centuries.
• My sister went to Japan in 1976, and she has been living there since then.
• I have been working in Baghdat since the war started.
• Ever since it started snowing, no buses have been running
• The teacher has been explaining the lesson since he entered the room.
• My friend has been looking after me ever since I got sick.

Bazen Yan Cümlecikte "The Simple Past" yerine "The Present Perfect" ya da The Present Perfect Continuous" kullanılabilir. Ancak bu cümleciklerde kullanılan fiillerin süreklilik gösteren bir eylemi dile getirmesi mutlaka gereklidir. Kısa süreli bir eylem ancak "The Simple Past" ile dile getirilebilir.

1. - I have been working in this factory since I have been living here.
2. - I have been working in this factory since I moved here.

Birinci cümlede “live”(yaşamak) fiili süreklilik belirten bir fiil olduğundan “since” den sonra “The Present Perfect Continuous” kullanılmış, ikinci cümlede “move” filli süreklilik belirtmediği için “The Simple Past” kullanılmıştır.

Geçmişte başlayan ve şu anda da devam eden eylemleri dile getirirken çoğu kez aşağıdaki sözcükler de kullanılabilir:

always	all the morning	lately
all (my, your, his) life	still	all the week
all the afternoon	regularly	all day (long)
so far	all the evening	all the time
constantly	until now	recently
now/just	all night (long)	this week, month, term

Aşağıdaki örnekleri inceleyelim:

• My father has been working in this firm for six months now.
• My mother has been doing the rooms until now.
• The teacher has been coughing a lot lately.
• I have been thinking about this problem all the week.
• The students have been working very well this term.
• We have been hearing from her regularly.
• I have been expecting a call from my girl friend all day.
• The new students have been behaving very well so far.

Usage (Kullanışı)

Geçmişte başlayan ve yeni bitmiş olan eylemleri dile getirmek için “The Present Perfect Continuous” kullanılır. Bu türlü söz dizilerinde bizi ilgilendiren şey bu ana kadar bir kimsenin vaktini nasıl geçirmiş olduğudur.

A - What have you been doing since you woke up, Sally?
B - I have been writting letters to my friends.

• What has Mary been doing since the holidays began?
• Martin has been studying French as he wants to carry on his studies there.

Bir süreden beri devam eden ve az önce biten ya da hala devam eden bir eyleme bir kimsenin dikkatini çekme ya de şu andaki bir durumun önceki nedenlerini yani sebep sonuç ilişkilerini açıklamak için “The Present Perfect Continuous” kullanılır. Bu tür cümlelerde “for” ve “since” sözcükleri de kullanılabilir.

• Be careful. I have been painting the door.
• Drive carefully. It has been raining for a long time.
• I have been putting coal in the fire. That's why my hands are all black.
• Johnson's clothes are wet. He has been walking in the rain for a long time.
• My hands are dirty because I have been repairing the car.
• I know everything about roses. I have been growing them for the last fifty years.
• The children have been eating plums all day, and they are ill now.
• Lisa has been reading in bad light and now she has got a headache.

Konuşma sırasında devam etmese bile geçmişte başlayıp şimdiye kadar aralıklı olarak tekrar edilen eylemleri ve alışkanlıklarımızı dile getirmek için Present Perfect Continuous kullanılır.

• They have been quarrelling ever since they got married.
• The man has been drinking every day since he came to this city.
• We have been hearing good news from the teacher since she went to London.
• We have been going to the theatre every week ever since we came to Turkey.
• Peter has been breaking things ever since he was a little boy.
• The doctor has been giving me penicillin ever since I got sick.

Present Perfecet Continuous hareket göstermeyen (pasif bir durum gösteren) fiillerle kullanılarak geçmişte başlayan bir eylemin (temporary action) konuşma sırasında da devam ettiğini gösterir. Bu fiiller çok seyrek olarak Present Perfect ile de kullanılırlar.

• We have been waiting here for one hour.
• Tom has been sitting in front of the television set for half an hour.
• Mary has been sleeping for ten hours.
• We have been staying at this hotel since May.
• My friend has been standing by the table for twenty minutes.
• Helen has been lying on the grass for a long time.

Mantık yolu ile sonuca vardığımız ya da kuvvetle tahmin yürüttüğümüz eylemleri dile getirmek için “The Present Perfect Continuous” kullanılır. Bu tür cümlelerde ifade edilen eylemler yeni bitmiştir.

• The room smells of garlic; your father has been eating garlic again.
• Your breath smells; you have been drinking.
• You look frightened; you have been watching a horror film again.

“The Present Perfect Continuous” ile kurulmuş bu tür cümlelerde “must” sözcüğü de kullanılabilir: bu anlamda güçlü bir çıkarım sözkonusudur.

• You look frightened; you must have been watching a horror film again.
• He is late; he must have missed the bus again.

“The Present Perfect Continuous” ile yapılmış bir cümle Türkçeye “The Present Continuous” gibi de çevrilebilir. Bu bakımdan bu tense ile cümle yaparken son derece dikkat etmek gerekir.

We have been waiting here for two hours.
a. İki saatten beri burada beklemekteyiz.
b. İki saatten beri burada bekliyoruz.

2. Cümlelerin Karşılaştırılmaları:

a. I have been studying English for ten years.
   On yıldan beri İngilizce çalışmaktayım (çalışıyorum).

b. I have studied English for ten years.
   On yıl ingilizce çalıştım (çalışıyorum).

c. I have studied English.
   İngilizce çalıştım.

d. I am studying English.
   İngilizce çalışıyorum.

Birinci (a) cümlesi on yıl önce başlayan ve hâlâ devam eden bir eylemi gösterir. İkinci (b) cümlesi on yıl önce başlayan ve bu zamana dek devam eden bir eylemi gösterir. Bu eylem yeni bitmiş olabileceği gibi hâlâ devam edebilir de. Üçüncü (c) cümlesi tamamiyle bitmiş bir eylemi gösterir. Dördüncü (d) cümlesi konuşma sırasında devam eden bir eylemi gösterir.

a. I have been staying in Istanbul for ten days.
   On günden beri istanbul'da kalmaktayım (kalıyorum).

b. I am staying in istanbul for ten days.
    İstanbul'da on gün kalıyorum (kalacağım).

Yukarıdaki birinci (a) cümlesi benim on günden beri İstanbul’da kalmakta olduğumu gösterir. İkinci (b) cümlesi ise gelecekte yapılması planlanmış bir eylemi gösterir, “İstanbul'da on gün kalıyorum” dediğimiz zaman eylem başlamış olabilir de. Yani İstanbul’a geleli birkaç gün olmuş olabilir.

“The Present Perfect Continuous” durum ifade eden fiillerle kullanamayız. Bu nedenle bu fiiller “The Present Perfect” ile kullanılırlar. Bu fiillerin bazıları şunlardır:

• I have known the teacher for a long time.
• I have been in Istanbul since 1960.
• I have always wanted to go to Paris.
• I have loved you ever since I was 15 years old.

“The Present Perfect Continuous” doğasında ya da durum gereği devamlılık göstermeyen fiilleri dile getirmek için kullanılmaz, bunun yerine “The Present Perfect” ya da “The Simple Past” kullanılır.

• I have returned my book to the library.
• The plane has arrived
• I have finished my homework.
• He has killed the woman.
• I have jumped off the wall.

Eğer bir eylemin yapılması uzun zaman alıyorsa elbette bu cümleyi Present Perfect Continuous ile kurabiliriz.

• I have been killing the monster for half an hour.
• We have been drinking since this morning.

Always, never, sometimes, once, twice, tree times already, yet, often, still, just gibi Present Perfect Simple ile kullanılan zarflar Present Perfect Continuous tense ile kullanılmaz.

• I have been reading this book since this morning, and I have read a hundred page so far.
• They have been debating on the subject for about five hours, but they haven’t reached any solution yet.

Bazı fiiller hem “the Present Perfect Simple” ile kullanılır hem de “the Present Perfect Continuous tense” ile kullanılabılır, bu durumda anlamlarında herhangi bir değişiklik olmaz. Sadece yapılan eylemin sürekliliği vurgulanır. Bu filler:

• They have been working for that for the last four years
• He have worked for the government for nearly ten years.
• It has been showering since afternoon.
• It has snowed for two days.

“The Present Perfect Continuous tense” i mean, plan, promise, propose, threaten, going to gibi niyet ifade eden fiillerle kullandığımızda konuşma anına kadar gerçekleşmeyen ancak gelecekte olması durumu çok az olan düşünceli ifade edebiliriz.

• They have been going to cut down that old tree ever since last summer, but still stands there.
• I have been meaning to call and see him for ages. But I am so busy at work.
• Don’t pay any attention to their promises. They have been promising to repeat the repair of the roof for years.
• He has been asking Elizabeth to marry him ever since they first met.

Bu iki zamanın biribirlerinin yerine kullanılabilmelerine rağmen, (the Present Continuous Tense” de olduğu gibi geçici durumları ifade edebilmek için “the Present Perfec Continuous” kullanımı tercih edilir.

• He has been working for the Government for a year, but he is starting with a large private company next month.
