Reduction of Noun Clause
(İsim Cümleciklerinin Kısaltılması)

“İsim cümlecikleri” (noun clauses), “what, where, how, when” gibi bir soru kelimesi ya da “whether” ile başlıyorsa ve temel cümlenin (main clause) öznesi ile isim cümleciğinin (noun clause) öznesi aynı ise isim cümleciği kısaltılarak “question word + to V1” “whether + to V1” şeklinde ifade edilebilir. Ancak kısaltma yoluna giderken isim cümleciğinde (noun clause) kullanılan zaman göz önüne alınmalıdır. Tüm zamanlar için kısaltma yapmak mümkün değildir. Eğer isim cümleciği “will, can, could, should, must, have to” içeriyorsa kısaltma yapılabilir.

• Native American tribes didn’t know how they would overcome the diseases brought from Europe.
• Native American tribes didn’t know how to overcome the diseases brought from Europe.
• (Yerli Amerikalılar Avrupa’dan gelen hastalıklarla nasıl başedeceklerini bilmiyorlardı.)

• We haven’t been informed yet when we will leave tomorrow.
• We haven’t been informed when to leave tomorrow.
• (Yarın ne zaman gideceğimizi bize hala bildirmediler.)

• He didn’t make out how much he had to pay for the trip.
• He didn’t make out how much to pay for the trip.
• (Gezi için ne kadar ödemek zorunda olduğunu çıkaramadı.)

•  I don't know what I should do with these kids.
•  I don't know what to do with these kids.
• (Bu çocuklarla ne yapacağımı bilmiyorum.)

Eğer temel cümlenin nesnesi ile isim cümleciğinin öznesi aynı ise bu durumda da kısaltma yapılabilir.

• I explained them how they could find the post office.
• I told them how to get to our new house.
• (Onlara postahaneyi nasıl bulacaklarını açıkladım.)

• The group leader has shown the members where they will pass the night.
• The group leader has shown the members where to pass the night.

İsim cümleciği “whether” ile başladığında kısaltma yapılabilir. Ancak “if” ile başlıyorsa kısaltma yapılamaz.

• We can't decide whether we should stay at home or come with you.
• We can't decide whether to stay at home or (to) come with you.

“We can't decide if to stay at home or (to) come with you.” kullanımı yanlıştır.
İsim cümleciği "why" ile başlıyorsa kısaltma yapılamaz.

• I didn’t understand why I would have to wait there.

“I didn’t understand why to wait there.” biçiminde kısaltamayız, yanlış olur.

Bazı önemli notlar:

1- I don’t think / I can’t think

“I don’t think ….” İfadesi zannetmiyorum anlamında gelir;

• I don’t think that he will leave his job as he is expecting to be promoted.
• (Terfi edeceğinden dolayı işinden ayrılacagını zannetmiyorum.)

• I don’t think I will work with you under these harsh conditions.
• (Sizinle bu zor koşullar altıda çalışacağımı zannetmiyorum.)

“I can’t think” bir neden düşünemiyorum, anlayamıyorum anlamında kullanılır.

• I can’t think why she won’t accept to join us.
• (Bize katılmayı neden kabul etmeyeceğine dair bir neden düşünemiyorum.)

• I can’t think why she refused our offer.
• (Teklifimizi neden reddettiğini bir türlü anlayamıyorum.)

2-“Ask, want to know, wonder, be not sure, etc…” gibi fiiller “that” ile değil, daha çok “whether / if” yada “what, where how, when” gibi soru kelimeleri alır.

3-“Tell, understand, explain, know, etc…” gibi filler her üç yapıyı ile kullanılabilir.
