Correlative Conjunctions
(Paralal Yapılar)

Both …… and (Hem …... hem de)
Both ….... and olumlu cümlelerde kullanılır, kendisinden sonra gelen fiil daima çoğuldur.

• She has both the courage and the will to get rid of difficulties she encounters.
• (O, karşılaştığı zorlukla baş etmek için hem cesarete hem de iradeye sahiptir.)

Not only ……. but (also) (Sadece …... değil fakat (aynı zamanda)
Not only …... but (also) olumlu cümlelerde kullanılır, ve “both ….. and” yapısından daha güçlü bir ifadedeyi vurgulamak için kullanılır.

• He is not only a successful manager but also a good father. 
• (O sadece başarılı bir yönetici değil, aynı zamanda iyi bir babadır.)
• I’ll eat them both - not only the cheesecake but also the frozen hot chocolate. 
• (Her ikisini de yiyeceğim. - Sadece peynirli keki değil,  ayrıca dondurulmuş sıcak çikolatayı da.)
• Not only succes but also happiness can be earned. 
• (Sadece başarı değil, ayni zamanda mutlulukta kazanılabilir)

Not only ..........but also bağlacının kullanımında “not only” kısmı cümlenin başına alınarak da yazılabilir. Bunun nedeni, cümleciğe vurgu yapılmak istenmesidir.

• I not only want to make money (=not only do I want to make money), but also earn respect. 
• (Ben sadece para kazanmak değil, aynı zamanda saygınlık kazanmak istiyorum.)

Neither ……. nor  (Ne ....... ne de)

Neither...... nor cümleyi doğrudan olumsuz yapan bir ifadedir.

• Neither Yolanda nor the cousins expressed their disappointment. 
• (Ne Yolanda nede kuzenleri hayal kırıklığını dile getirdiler.)

Either ....... or  (Ya …... ya da)

Either...... or genellikle olumlu cümlelerde kullanılır. Olumsuz bir cümlede “neither …… nor” ile ayni anlama gelir.

• She told me either we could visit our friends or we could go away for the weekend
• (Arkadaşlarımızı ziyaret edebileceğimizi ya da hafta sonu için gezmeye gidebileceğimizi söyledi.)
• I will either go for a hike or stay home and watch TV. 
• (Ya bir yürüyüşe çıkacağım ya da evde kalacak ve TV izleyeceğim.)
• While shopping, you either need cash or a credit card. 
• (Alışveriş yaparken ya nakit ya da kredi kartına ihtiyacınız olur.)

Not ….. but (Sadece …... değil fakat (aynı zamanda)
Not only …... but (also) yapsının kısa bir biçimidir.

• There are not two but three Baltic states: Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
• (İki değil üç Baltık devleti var: Litvanya, Letonya ve Estonya.)
• In sport, what counts is not the winning but the taking part. 
• (Sporda, önemli olan şey kazanma değil, katılmaktır.)

Whether …… or  (-lup olmadığını / olsun veya olmasın / olsa da olmasa da)

• I didn’t know whether you’d want the cheesecake or the frozen hot chocolate, so I got you both
• (Senin peynirli kek mi yoksa dondurulmuş sıcak çikolatamı istediğini bilmiyordum, bu yüzden ikisini birden aldım.)
• I love my family whether they love me or not.
• (Ailemi, onlar beni sevse de sevmese de severim.)
• Whether you love them or hate them, you have to admit that the Rolling Stones are very popular.
• (İster onları sev ister onlardan nefret et, Rolling Stones'un çok popüler olduğunu itiraf etmelisiniz.)
• I don’t care whether you go or stay.  
• (Gitsen de kalsan da aldırmam.)

“Whether” bağlaç (conditional) olarak kullanılırsa “or not” genelde atılamaz, isim cümleciklerinde (naun clause) ise “whether” ile birlikte “or not” kullanmak isteğe bağlıdır:

• I will go on vacation whether she comes or not. (Conitional) 
• (O gelse de gelmese de ben tatile gideceğim. )
• I don’t know whether she will come with me (or not). (Naun clause) 
• (Onun, benimle gelip gelmeyeceğini bilmiyorum.)

As …… as (-e / a kadar)
As … as paralel yapısı olumlu cümlelerde iki öğe arasında eşitlik olduğunu gösterir.

• My elder sister is as old as your mother.
• (Ablam senin annenin yaşındadır.)

(Eşitlik olduğu için “Your mother is as old as my elder sister” cümlesiyle aynı anlamdadır.)

• Tom drives car as carefully as a professional driver.
• (Tom arabayı bir profesyonel sürücü kadar dikkatli sürer.)

(Eşitlik olduğu için “A professional drivers drives as carefully as Tom” cümlesiyle aynı anlamdadır.)

Just as … so (tıpkı … gibi … da)
Just as cümle başında kullanıldığında genelde so ile paralellik kurar:

• Just as he is an infamous leader, so is his son. 
• (Oğlu da tam babası gibi rezil bir lider.)
• Just as he is an infamous leader, so too is his son. (paralelliği güçlendirmek için “too” ekelenebilir)

Cümle ortasında kullanıldığında Just as paralellik için yeterlidir:

• The economy of Venezuela depends heavily on exporting oil, just as the economy of United States depends on petroleum imports. (Venezuela ekonomisi de , tıpkı Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ekonomisinin petrol ithalatına bağlı olduğu gibi, petrol ihracına büyük ölçüde bağımlıdır.)
• Quantum theory specifies new rules for describing the universe, just as it has introduced new ways of thinking about matter and energy. (Kuantum teorisi, maddenin ve enerjinin yeni düşünce yollarını ortaya attığı gibi evreni açıklamak için yeni kurallar belirtir.)

'Just as' yerine 'Just like' ifadesi de kullanılabilir: Just like daha informal kullanımdır ve dolayısıyla konuşma diline daha uygundur.

• Just like his father is an infamous leader, so is he.
• He is an infamous leader, just like his father.

Bir cümlenin öğelerini ya da cümlenin kendisini bir kereden fazla kullanmak istersek correlative conjunctions diye adlandırdığımız neither ... nor, either ... or, not only ... but (also) ve both ….and'i kullanırız. Bu tür cümle yapılarında yüklemin tekil yada çoğul olarak ifade edilmesi yüklemden önce kullanılan özneye göre belirlenir.

• Both my father and mother are working as teachers.
• Neither the kitchen nor the bathroom is thoroughly cleaned
• Neither my brothers nor I am interested in playing football.
• Neither Toby nor Sammy has completed their higher education
• Either Frank orr the Morgans are coming for a short visit.
• Either you or we are going to make a phone to my parents.

Not only … but also cümlenin başında kullanıldığında eylem cümlesi devrik olarak kullanılabilir. Ancak özne yi vurgulamak için kullanıldığında devrik olmaz.

• Not only did Michael grill a steak for Tiffany, but he alsoprepared a hotdog for Rocket, her dog.
• Not only is he a professional footballer, but he’s also a successful businessman.

“Also” yerine cümlenin sonuna “as well” yada “too” de kullanılabilir.

• Like the French Revolution, the Eastern European revolutions brought down not only a regime, but an empire as well.

“But” yerine “yet” yada cümlenin sonunda “though” da kullanılabilir.

• He is not only a successful manager, yet a good father.
• She is not only taking a holiday also getting a pay rise, though.

Bu bağlaçlar bir cümlede özneyi, nesneyi, sıfatı, zarfı, yada bir yüklemi bağlayabilir.

Subject;

• Neither Phillip nor Patty visited Henry in the hospital.
• Either Phillip or Patty visited Henry in the hospital.
• Not only Phillip but (also) Patty visited Henry in the hospital.
• Both Phillip and Patty visited Henry in the hospital.

Verb;

• The bathroom was neither painted nor cleaned during the renovations.
• Frank either called or stopped by to see you.
• Most of us not only finished our assignments early but (also) submitted them before the deadline.
• Joshua both cooked and served the meal.

Object;

• Henrietta invited neither her parents nor her in-laws to her son's wedding.
• I prepare either chicken salad or turkey sandwiches for the party.
• Fred is hoping to visit not only Milan but (also) Lyon.
• During our trip to Orlando we visited both the EPCOT Center and the Kennedy Space Center.

Özne-Yüklem Uyumu

Bu tür cümlelerin kullanılmasında dikkat etmemiz gereken, kullanılan fiilin birinci özneyle değil, ikinci özneyle uymlu olması gerekir.

• Either my brother or my mum look looks after our cat when we’re away on holiday.
• Either my brother or my parents looks look after our cat when we’re away on holiday.
• Neither the manager nor his assistant are is here today.
• Neither the manager nor his assistants is are here today.

Fiillerin uyumuna özellikle dikkat etmeniz gerekir:
Hata: Many people are not only driving with one hand, but also talk on their cell phones.
Doğrusu: Many people are not only driving with one hand, but also talking on their cell phones.
